Sun, 31 Jan, 2016 12:10:43 AM FTimes – STT Report, Jan 31 ![]() File Photo Lehtikuva. Smartphone-controlled household appliances have security flaws which would easily allow hackers to harass device owners, reported the Finnish language daily Keskisuomalainen.
A research by the University of Jyväskylä revealed, for example, vulnerabilities in remote-controlled coffee machines and electric switches.
For example, vulnerabilities in Internet-controlled radiators in use at a summer cottage could allow the machine to be turned on without the owner’s knowledge.
In the worst case, the device could cause a fire.
A hacker could also take over, for example, a coffee machine and use it for malicious purposes.
A seemingly innocent-yet-impressive household appliance could be used, without the owner’s notice, to participate in a denial-of-service attack, which can paralyse a website or service.
According to the newspaper’s interview with an expert, attacks can be prevented through the use of a long and difficult password in wireless home internet connections.
