Events scheduled over the weekend at the Helsinki Cathedral will proceed normally despite water damage.
Late on Friday, water accidentally leaked from the south tower of the church through a broken sprinkler.
The water leaked into the church sanctuary and crypt, but the space dried overnight to the extent that the scheduled events in the church hall can proceed as planned. Tourists are also permitted to visit the church.
“The crypt, unfortunately, is completely closed, and all crypt events have been cancelled,” said head sacristan Petri Oittinen on the cathedral’s website on Saturday.
The final amount and severity of the water damage will only be known after a more thorough investigation. However, the organ and other musical instruments are said to have survived unscathed.
The burst pipe was noticed on Friday after 10 at night by the organist who was practising in the closed church.
