The police suspect the Turku Animal Protection Association (TESY) of aggravated embezzlement, reported the Finnish language daily Turun Sanomat.
Experts interviewed by the newspaper estimated that tens of thousands of euros may be missing from donations collected in 2014.
Chairman Maylis Spiik, however, claimed that the suspicion is a mistake.
The police came to suspect a crime because of reports in the Turun Sanomat. The newspaper acquired financial data of TESY and, after studying them, contacted the police.
There is some confusion, for example, in recording the membership fee income of the association.
The income from the membership fee revenue is approximately 22,000 euros, while the numbers in the annual report are closer to 40,000 euros.
The report said the association owns, among other things, nine residential units, some of which are leased to the association’s inner circle.
The annual rent revenue is, according to the director of Suomen Vuokranantajat (Finnish Landlords), lower than it should be.
The association regularly organises new fundraisers. However, the Turun Sanomat claims that the association is in possession of more than one million euros, the majority of which will not be used for the benefit of animals.
According to the TESY chairman, the allegations are farfetched. For example, the membership fee discrepancies can be explained, in her view, by the fact that half of all membership fee proceeds go to TESY’s parent association Finland Animal Protection Association.
