Two asylum seekers were injured when another asylum seeker attacked them with a bladed weapon at Tervaharju refugee centre in Kemi, the police said.

The police received the alarm at about 12:30am in the afternoon.

The suspect is now in police custody and the incident is being investigated as aggravated assault.

The refugee reception centre’s director, Virpi Pakisjärvi said the injured asylum seekers were rushed to hospital in critical conditions.

Pakisjärvi said the incident is the first serious conflict that has occurred in the facility.

“Every now and then there have been minor agreements among the clients,” said Pakisjärvi.

The Kemi reception centre currently accommodates 450 asylum seekers.
