Wed, 03 Feb, 2016 12:08:41 AM FTimes – STT Report, Feb 3 File Photo Lehtikuva. Finland is planning to test unmanned drones along its border with Russia, reported the news agency Reuters.
Major Jussi Napola of the Finnish Border Guard revealed the plan, said the report.
Napola, however, declined to reveal why the country wanted to run the tests along the 1,340km border where migrant movements have grown.
The border guard official who declined to comment further said the reason for the tests is to assess the suitability of the technology.
“The plan is to test the remote piloted aerial system in operational use at the Russian border and the coastal areas. We want to see, if the technology suits our needs and if it is suitable for Finnish conditions,” Napola was quoted by Reuters as saying.
According to Napola, the technology has turned into a viable and cost effective option and the target is to get more experience of their operational capabilities.
According to the Finnish Border Guard, about 500 asylum seekers have come from Russia in January this year compared to about 700 in the whole of 2015.
The European Union is already using drones to help monitor the flow of migrants and refugees over the Mediterranean, and Napola said the border guard has worked with the EU border agency Frontex in reviewing different drone options.
