The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has referred the war crime cases involving two Iraqi nationals for consideration of charges to the Office of the Prosecutor General.

The police launched pre-trial investigations into the cases at the end of last year.

War crimes cover acts of varying degrees. In these cases the suspicions involve desecration of corpses.

NBI Detective Chief Inspector Jari Räty said one suspect was remanded in November and the other in January.

The suspects arrived in the country from Iraq in autumn.

The suspected crimes took place in 2014 and 2015 in Iraq during an armed conflict. The cases are not linked to each other.

Both the suspects – one who was arrested in Pirkanmaa region and the other in Hämeenlinna region – fought against the extremist organisation Isis.

According to the police, one fought in an armed group alongside the Iraqi army while the other served in the Iraqi army.

In both cases there was material on the internet which could be connected to the suspected persons, said Räty.

According to Räty, the suspicion of desecrating corpses, which possibly qualifies as war crimes, was revealed in photos posted on the social media site Facebook.

Räty refused to disclose whether the suspects were asylum seekers.
