Notorious bank robber Matti Markkanen also known as "Volvo-Markkanen" died at the Meilahti hospital in Helsinki on Wednesday. He was 78.
 
Markkanen was suffering from various complications including diabetes.
 
Taavi Kassila, a close friend to Markkanen described his passing as peaceful. 
 
Markkanen's daughter and ex-wife were also present at the hospital at the time of his death.
 
Markkanen committed hundreds of crimes in the Nordic countries in the late 1960s until the early 80s. Most often he used a Volvo as a gate-away car.
 
He spent time in a number of prisons in the country for his crimes. 
 
He spent his last imprisonment in Turku prison (Kakola) from where he was released in 1988.
 
Two books, Kameleontti (The Chameleon) and Volvo-rosvo (The Bank Robber) have been written based on his life.
 
He also appeared in television programmes and wrote articles in the Hymy magazine.
 
Markkanen's death was first reported by Finnish language weekly magazine Apu-lehti.
