The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is investigating a suspect for financing of Al-shabaab terrorist groups and the promotion of the group's activities.

The suspect, a middle-aged Somali man was taken on remand on Friday.

“The investigation is working on the premise that the operation started in 2006. The challenge comes from the fact that the alleged criminal offenses have occurred mainly in Somalia,” said lead investigating inspector Ari Soronen.

The man is suspected of working in Somalia in support of the Al-Shabaab organisation.

According to the NBI, the organisation is known to collect funds from Nordic countries. Al-Shabaab is considered a terrorist organisation by the US, British, Canadian and Australian gov-ernments.

The suspect arrived in Finland last September.

According to Soronen, this was his first time in Finland. He was arrested on a less severe offense.
