Several changes to the laws regarding moose hunting will be enforced next year, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry announced on Friday.

The start date of the moose hunting season will be delayed from the last Saturday of September to the second Saturday of October, except in Lapland.

In Lapland, moose hunting will be from September 1 to September 15, and the second hunting period will be the same as the rest of the country.

The amendment aims at reducing the disturbance of the elk mating season, ensuring that a large number of elk will be born at the usual time in the spring.

Meanwhile, hunters have been advised to avoid letting dogs loose near the border zone by the Southeast Finland Border Guard District. According to the Border Guard, dogs often chase game animals to the Russian side of the border and follow them across.

In accordance with the border agreement with Russia and Finland, both countries should strive to keep pet animals from crossing the borders. According to the Border Guards, dogs are usually returned from the Russian side, either of their own will or through the Russian border authorities.

However, in some cases, dogs have crossed the border and never returned.
