The government wants online voting alongside traditional voting booths for all general elections.
A committee has begun evaluating the costs and the impacts of implementing an online voting system. The committee has parliamentary representation.
Justice and Labour Minister Jari Lindström believes electronic voting has both advantages and risks.
“As the 100-year anniversary of Finland approaches, it’s good to evaluate online voting as a means to promote democracy,” Lindström said in a statement.
The introduction of online voting is planned for municipal, parliamentary, European parliamentary, and presidential elections. Online voting could also be used for advisory referendums.
The committee report is planned to be completed next year.
