The District Court of Oulu on Wednesday sentenced a man to eight years in prison for sexually abusing his daughter.

The man was found guilty for aggravated child sexual abuse which happened in 1999-2008.

The court said the victim’s testimony could be regarded as credible and reliable.

The sentence for the man also included a compensation totalling 45,000 euros for the victim.

District Prosecutor Sari Kemppainen presented medical reports as evidence during the incest trial. According to the documents, the victim’s pregnancies were explained to the authorities as the results of relationships with 14- and 15-year-old boys.

The woman, now 26, has accused her father of aggravated child sexual abuse that occurred from 1999 to 2008. The 51-year-old man admitted to the crime, but denied part of the allegations.

The medical reports show, according to prosecution, that the health authorities also discussed the matter with social services. Social services were also frequently in contact with the family, and the daughter underwent psychiatric care as a child. The daughter admitted to attempting suicide as early as fourth grade by hanging herself with a clothesline.

“The information from the authorities is not connected, because the information was in different archives, and no one ever put together the overall picture of the problems,” said prosecutor Kemppainen.

The medical reports, according to the prosecution, also clearly indicate that the father struck his daughter with a strap, even before the alleged sexual abuses commenced.
