The economic recession which began in 2009 has decreased the emissions of nitrogen oxides from Baltic Sea shipping by 8% (2009-2008), according to the Finnish Meteorological Institute.

Emission levels from shipping usually reach their maximum during the summer months because of the high passenger traffic, said a release of the institute on Saturday.

These conclusions are based on the results of emission modelling studies by the Finnish Meteorological Institute which clarifies the role of Baltic Sea shipping in air pollution.

STEAM, the emission model used in the study, is based on the automatic position data transmitted by ships’ navigation systems.

The vessels registered in the Baltic Sea riparian states are responsible for about half of the exhaust emissions.

The Nordic countries contribute about a third of the emissions.

Other European Union-flagged vessels produce about one third and non-EU ships are responsible for the remaining.

The work to determine the structure, the emissions and cost changes of ship traffic play an important role in the planned emissions cuts in the Baltic Sea area.

The study was funded by the Finnish Transport Safety Agency and the European Regional Development Fund, according to the release.
