Possible sanctions of the European Union against Russia are seen to result in a suspension of the Finland-Russia cross-border cooperation programmes, according to a report of MTV news.
The MTV report said if the suspension takes place, it would take away EU funding of almost 200 million euros from Finland for the next seven years.
The matter will be on the agenda of EU summit scheduled for Wednesday in Brussels.
Half of the cross-border cooperation funding comes from the EU, a quarter from Russia and another quarter from Finland.
The programmes have been used to build roads and to enhance border-crossing points to facilitate trade with Russia.
The ENPI CBC (European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument, Cross-Border Cooperation) funding period has been set for 2014-2020.
Finland’s cooperation with Russia has been implemented through three programmes – Kolarctic, Karelia, and Southeast Finland.
