The Finnish Customs is tightening its control on alcoholic beverages bought online.

According to observations made, taxes are often not paid in the country.

The Customs said shipments of alcoholic beverages from other EU countries have increased significantly in the recent years.

The shipments arrive from countries such as Germany, Estonia, the Netherlands and France, and the consignments include wines, beers, whiskeys and champagnes.

The tightened control aims to establish tax obligation because the taxpayer could be either the seller or the person who placed the order.

The most common way to order alcoholic products online is through online shopping, whereby an individual orders the products from another EU country and the seller arranges the delivery of the consignment.

In this case, the remote seller is obligated to pay the tax and thus the buyer cannot be taxed.

However, the customs may resort to seize the product if the remote seller had not paid the taxes.
