Mon, 25 Aug, 2014 12:05:20 AM FTimes-STT Report, August 25 ![]() Salmon fly fishing on River Tana in Nuorgam, Finnish Lapland. Photo – Lehtikuva. Salmon catch off the Norwegian coast has turned to be much less than expected, found a recent study.
A joint research by Norway, Finland and Russia concluded that Finns benefit much from the salmon fish stocks from the Teno River.
The findings will further complicate the negotiations on the agreement regarding fishing regulations for the fishing area of Teno, explained salmon researcher Eero Niemelä.
Finland and Norway have been engaged for a long time in negotiations on the renewal of the 25-year-old agreement.
Norway has already called for stricter regulations on fishing tourism in the Teno. In practice, this will hit Finland only, because fishing tourism on the riverside across the Norwegian border is non-existent.
Pentti Lähteenoja, head of Administration and Planning Department at the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, admits that negotiations are difficult. According to his assessment, it is possible that a new agreement cannot be struck in time.
