Only 30 per cent international cruise ships dispose waste water at ports, said the Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission-Helsinki Commission (HELCOM) in a report.

In 2010, International Maritime Organisation (IMO) imposed a ban on discharge of waste water straight into the Baltic Sea, as long as the ports had an appropriate capacity for waste water handling.

The IMO’s decision, has, however, been delayed for several years.

“In Helsinki, like in any other key ports in the Baltic Sea, cruise ships have the opportunity to discharge waste water. Cruise ships do not dispose lavatory and other waste water at the ports, because this is not a legal obligation,” said the head of Marine Programme, WWF Finland.

In 2007, passenger ferry companies operating in the country stopped discharging waste water into the Baltic Sea.
