FTimes-STT Report, Mar 9

Finnish voters consider political parties a more important criterion for casting votes than candidates, according to a latest survey by the Foundation for Municipal Development.

A total of 61 per cent of the respondents revealed they will vote according to the party which the candidates represent.

In a similar survey conducted in 2011, the corresponding figure was 68 per cent.

Based on the responses, the political parties must match the values considered important by the voters.

The parties must also be able to uphold the interests of the social group to which the voters feel they belong.

The party’s activities in the last four years are expected not to conflict with the expectation of the supporter, found the survey.

However, over 25 per cent of the respondents believe they will vote for the best candidate, irrespective of the party ticket which a candidate is running on.

For this group, the most important factors are the candidate’s credibility and reliability as well the candidate’s ability to drive issues of importance.

A total of 1,022 people were interviewed in the course of the survey.
