Thu, 02 Apr, 2015 12:04:30 AM FTimes – STT Report, April 2 ![]() File Photo Lehtikuva. A new law which entitles authorities the right to inform the police directly in case they suspect that someone might be in danger of becoming a victim of violence came in force on Wednesday.
The new law enables authorities such as in the health care, youth activities and social welfare to report by own initiative.
The goal of the new legislation is especially aimed at preventing family and child killings.
Previously, the police had to seek information by themselves. This made the task difficult because the police were not always able to identify what kind of information was in the hands of other authorities.
"In recent years, there have been situations, for instance, in the child protection welfare or in schools where they have been aware of say child abuse, but it was not reported to the police," said the Minister of the Interior Päivi Räsänen.
The change is expected to increase reports filed with the police by several hundred in a year.
