According to the report of a University of Helsinki doctoral research, all the species were found in the rotting woods in Hameenlinna’s Evo, Vantaa’s Herukkapuro, Koli in North Karelia as well as other places.
The newly-discovered species are very small and were identified by microscope and DNA analysis.

The species were discovered by Natural History Museum PhD student Annina Launis as part of a research programme funded by the Ministry of the Environment.
“The discovery of that many new species shows just how incomplete our knowledge of Finnish species is, but, on the other hand, helps emphasize the significance of decaying trees to biodiversity,” said Launis.
