This comes after the Supreme Court ruled that fire fighters must be paid salary for standby period.
The court’s ruling viewed that during the standby period, fire fighters should be in the fire station in five minutes in case an alarm is triggered.
Until now, only 30 per cent of the normal salary is paid on standby. According the Hämen Sanomat, standby arrangements are used mainly in sparsely populated areas, where fire stations are not occupied all the time.
Finnish Association of Fire Fighters Chairman Kim Nikula in an interview with the newspaper said the union’s compensation claim could rise to a total of 20-30 million euros, while local firemen agreement claim could be 20 million euros.
