Finns who served in peacekeeping missions abroad are set to be accorded official status of veterans, reported the reservist magazine Reserviläinen-lehti.

According to the Peacekeepers' Association of Finland, the Defence Ministry is preparing veteran cards for those who served in peacekeeping missions.

The cards will probably be introduced at the end of the year.

The association together with the Defence Forces are set to examine what kind of benefits the veterans will gain courtesy of the card.

Already other Nordic countries have practice in place which accord veteran status to officers who served in peacekeeping missions.

According to the association, until now approximately 45,000 Finns have served in peacekeeping missions.

The first Finnish peacekeeping mission took place 60 years ago in 1956.
