The Greens will elect a new leader next year.
“I want to say clearly that I will not be available,” Niinistö told national broadcaster Yle television current affairs programme Ylen Pressiklubi.
Niinistö said that the middle of the electoral period is a good time for a change in the helm of party leadership because, among other reasons, it enables the new chair to raise his or her profile before the next parliamentary elections.
The party statute limits the term to a maximum three two-year terms. Lawmaker Pekka Haavisto, among others, has, however, said that he was ready to support Niinistö for a fourth term.
“The Green has always had the principle that working as a team is more important than elevating an individual above everything,” Niinistö said.
