Interior minister condemns the attacks
FTimes – STT Report, May 26

Asylum seekers at a reception centre in Lahti have been assaulted several times in recent days, reported the Finnish language newspaper Etelä-Suomen Sanomat.

According to the social media Facebook updates from the Hennala reception centre, a number of residents have been directed to report crimes of assault and ill-treatment.

Often during the attacks, Finnish men came alone or in pairs and pounced on the residents at the reception centre, clobbering and kicking them, according to the updates.

The director of the centre, Markku Heikkilä told the news agency STT that some of the residents do not trust the Finnish legal system, which raises the threshold for reporting violence to the police.

Detective Chief Inspector Martti Hirvonen of the Häme police confirmed to the newspaper that one such incident that took place on Friday is under investigation.

Interior Minister Petteri Orpo in an interview with another Finnish language daily, Keskisuomalainen, condemned the attacks.
