In the study, researchers went through criminal reports related to misuse of the police information system. In all the cases investigated under the study, there were no reports of outright bribery.
Reports of misuse of information are becoming more likely to be associated with companies, and the suspects, according to the crime reports, are usually middle-aged Finnish men and more senior staff.
According to Police University College researcher Suvi-Tuuli Mansikkamäki, suspected cases of misuse of information often involve persons in firms who have access to valuable data.
“Suspected [cases of misuse of information] are often related to the fact that people carry corporate secrets with them. The fact that [the suspects] are often managerial staff is explained by the fact that higher positions offer better access to information,” Mansikkamäki said.
