Recession suspends excavation works
FTimes-STT Report, August 2

The economic situation in the markets forced the Nordic Gold Mine Company to suspend most of the excavation works, which prompted the authority to terminate about 40 employees at Raahe gold mine unit.

Company sources said that negotiation between the employer and employee leaders has already started to this effect.

“The layoff process of 40 employees in mining and concentrator sections will begin this month,” Raahe-mine leader Tom Söderman  told STT on Thursday.

Representative of mining and concentrator employees, Steward Jukka Taskinen, however, said that the negotiation process would take time as the authority is seeking corporate restructuring.

“The excavation works in the mine remained suspended almost completely because of the economical situation of the company,” Söderman said, adding that a total of 100 employees are working in the Raahe gold mine field at this moment.

Meanwhile, the Mondo Minerals also has started negotiation with the employees to terminate about 50 workers from its mining fields at Sotkamo and Outokumpu areas.
