FTimes- Xinhua Report, February 11

Suspected business related crimes have increased in the past few years, said Finnish police in a fresh report on economic crimes in Finland.

According to Finnish police, alleged economic crimes have more than doubled over the past six years from 91 cases in 2009 to 204 in 2013, Finnish Broadcasting Company reported on Sunday.

The increase could be almost entirely attributed to a rise in cases of abuse of authority. There were 155 such cases in 2013, which was twice as high as in 2012.

As the same time, the number of suspected crimes involving bribery decreased last year. However, the number of serious bribery cases kept rising.

According toJouni Hirvonen, Detective Chief Inspectorof National Bureau of Investigationof Finland, the form of corruption in Finland seems different from many other countries with problems involving money moves.

"It's more a question of services," said Hirvonen. "Benefits are granted and received and favors exchanged on both sides."

To prevent business related corruption, Hirvonen suggested, "competitive bidding processes should be more sharply scrutinized and closer attention paid to transparency."

Finland used to be good in fighting corruption in the world. The country has been ranked the first place in Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index for eight times since 2000.

Nevertheless, Finland's level of transparency somehow reduced in recent years. The nation slipped from the first to the third place in corruption index published in the end of 2013.

In addition, according to an EU report on corruption published last week,Finland still has work to do in making public procurement decisions and election funding more transparent, even though it is one of the best in anti-corruption among the EU countries.
