Itella Corporation, the country's main provider of postal and logistic service, has cut its workforce by terminating 495 jobs following co-determination talks.

In addition, 180 personnel have been forced to take part-time jobs.

The Post and Logistics Union (PAU), the union representing postal employees, has warned that based on the current model, the remaining workforce

would not be able to effectively carry out mail distribution.

"I do not think employees willing to work overtime will be found in this situation," said Heidi Nieminen, the union's secretary.

Itella has however remained firm, saying that its general services as well as mail distribution would not be disrupted because of the personnel reduction.

Mail must be distributed on all weekdays throughout the country as per the law.

The company has also promised to support and train the employees who have lost their jobs.
