National broadcaster YLE Radio is set to cut jobs equivalent to 160 man-years.

According to a release from YLE, the national broadcaster will terminate around 74 permanently employed persons.

The original reduction need during statutory negotiations was estimated at up to 185 persons.

The company will also reduce the use of fixed-term employment working relationship.

“The number of redundancies is clearly less than estimated during the beginning of negotiations. The operational changes and saving targets of the company will be able to be carried largely through these cuts,” said YLE CEO Lauri Kivinen.

YLE’s programme employees’ Chief Shop Steward Pike Epstein, however, expressed disappointment at the outcome of the negotiations.

According to Epstein, the savings could have been done in another way, saying personnel reduction could have been handled through natural attrition by the end of 2017.
