The union of the employees of the postal and logistic services Itella (PAU) on Saturday claimed that thousands of mail would remain undistributed during the Christmas due to a shortage of manpower.

PAU said the problem was created as the Itella authorities had dropped a huge number of jobs.

The union also said that Itella distributors would not able to cope with the excessive workload within the working hours.

The Itella authorities, however, denied any disruption in its services.

Itella Director Anu Punola said the distribution problems took place in spring, but the situation has already been stabilized.

Punola said Itella workers are doing overtime to ensure smooth delivery of logistics and mails.

Punola also said that the overtime work is optional and that no one would be compelled to do overtime duty.

PAU Chairman Heidi Nieminen mentioned a couple of reasons which may discourage workers from taking overtime load.

“Itella workers are very loyal and we are encouraging to work overtime even by shifts. They may keep some work undone for the next day, but it is not easy, because some people may call the distributors over phone, if they do not get mails at due time,” said Nieminen.
