The consumer confidence indicator stood at 4.4 in December, having been 2.6 in November and 0.4 in October, according to Statistics Finland’s data.
 
The consumer confidence indicator received the value 7.2 one year ago in December.
 
The long-term average for the confidence indicator is 11.9 as per the data based on Consumer Survey for which 1,271 people resident in Finland were interviewed between 1 and 16 December.
 
Of the four components of the consumer confidence indicators, expectations concerning Finland’s economy improved slightly in December compared to November.
 
There were no essential changes in the other components of the consumer confidence indicators, according to the statistics.
 
In November, the views on one’s own and Finland's economy were cautionary and expectations concerning employment were still gloomy.
 
 
In December, 26 per cent of consumers believed that Finland’s economic situation would improve in the coming twelve months, while 32 per cent of them thought that the country’s economy would deteriorate.
 
The respective proportions were 25 and 36 per cent in November and 31 and 29 per cent twelve months ago.
 
In all, 23 per cent of consumers in December believed that their own economy would improve and 14 per cent of them feared it would worsen over the year. The respective proportions were 24 and 13 per cent one year ago.
 
About 11 per cent of consumers in December thought that unemployment would decrease over the next year, while 60 per cent of them believed it would increase. The corresponding proportions were 15 and 55 per cent one year ago, the data show.
 
Consumers in December predicted that consumer prices would go up by 2.0 per cent over the next 12 months while in December last year the predicted inflation rate was 2.5 per cent.
 
In December, 44 per cent of consumers considered the time favourable for buying durable goods. Fourteen per cent of households were fairly or very certain to buy a car and five per cent a dwelling during the next 12 months.
 
Eighteen per cent of households were planning to spend money on renovating their dwelling within a year.
 
A total of 51 per cent of consumers considered saving worthwhile this December.
 
In all, 63 per cent of households had been able to lay aside some money and 77 per cent believed they would be able to do so during the next 12 months, the data show.
 
The population of the Consumer Survey comprises 4.4 million persons aged 15 to 84 and their 2.6 million households in Finland.
