National Conciliator Minna Helle has submitted a proposal for settlement of the ongoing icebreakers’ strike.

The parties are expected to respond to the proposal by midday today.

The sailors’ union and the Finnish Engineers’ Association-SKL are currently embroiled in contract dispute with Arctia Shipping.

The two unions rejected a settlement proposal two weeks ago.

“I hope a solution could be found on the basis of this settlement,” said Helle.

Earlier in the week, the sailors’ union and SKL threatened to go on strike on Maundy Thursday holiday which will fall on April 2.

The strike, if carried out, will also apply to passenger ships carrying cargo. However, the strike will not concern passenger cruise ships, if the car deck is loaded with only personal cars and buses.
