Transport Agency-Trafi is interested in installing the so-called alcohol gates at the ports, reported the Hämeen Sanomat, a Finnish language daily.

Jussi Pohjonen, a senior adviser at Trafi, said the agency desires to promote control of drunk driving via automatic means.

Alco gates are already in use at ports in the neighbouring Sweden. In Sweden, the alcohol barriers are installed at the port’s old border inspection booths.

All incoming drivers arriving from the port are subjected to an automatic breathalyser test at the barrier which lasts for a couple of seconds. If the device detects signs of alcohol, the barrier will not open prompting the arrival of the police at the scene.

Cruise ferry operator Tallink Silja is aware of the alco gates introduced in Sweden, but the company does not have detailed information on the plans by Trafi to install similar gates at the ports in Finland.

“We act according to how Trafi or any other authorities oblige us. Of course, in our view even one case of drunk driving is too much,” Tallink Silja Communication Director Marika Nöjd told the news agency STT.

According to Pohjonen, the best aspect of the alcohol gates is its deterrent effect.

The issue of alcohol gates is set to be presented before different authorities in meetings in autumn. For the part of the National Police Board, the measure is, however, deemed expensive.

In Nöjd’s view, the process in which all drivers are subjected to breathalyser test will in some way slow down the unloading of ships.
