A single fatal traffic accident costs the society approximately 2.77 million euro, says a recent study commissioned by the Finnish Transport Safety Agency (Trafi) and the Finnish Transport Agency.

According to the report, a serious injury in traffic costs 790,000 euros, while slight injuries cost about 34,000 euros.

The calculations are an update on numbers obtained during the turn of the century. Since then, the cost of a death, according to Trafi, has risen slightly. Personal injury costs, however, in an accident have fallen dramatically.

“The fall in costs reflects a reduction in serious injuries and improvements in road safety,” said Trafi specialist Riikka Rajamäki in a statement.
