Three people died in a fire that broke out in a small apartment building early Wednesday morning.

One woman was taken to the Töölö hospital for treatment after she inhaled gas.

The rescue and emergency services received fire alarm at 4am and rushed to the Malminkartano neigbourhood of Helsinki.

The cause of the fire is not yet known and according to the police the investigation may go on for several days.

One of the victims was found in an apartment that was completely consumed by fire. Another victim was found in an upper apartment while the third was discovered in an upper floor stairwell outside of what is believed to have been the victim’s own apartment.

Preliminary investigation suggests that the fire is likely to have originated from the apartment that was badly destroyed by fire.

The fire is then thought to have spread fast to the top floor.

An explosion is believed to have taken place according to the chief fire fighter. This is evident since small pieces of glasses were discovered far away from the building.

In early April, Finnish National Rescue Association said more people have died in fire this year than the corresponding periods of the last two years.

So far 30 people have already been killed in fire this year; the numbers of deaths were under 20 in the past years.

Several fire deaths have been reported during this month. Last year, a total of 58 people reportedly died in fire mishaps.
