The results of instant drug testing, which are used in various circles including the police, can be unreliable, said Finnish language newspaper Kaleva.

According to the newspaper, the results of the instant cannot reliably establish whether a person is under the influence of intoxicants.

“The results of the tests are always verified,” said Teemu Gunnar, head of Alcohol and Drug Analytics Unit at the National Institute for Health and Welfare.

The tests can be performed on urine, saliva and sweat.

In addition to police, the tests are also used in the military, prisons, units within healthcare services, drug rehabilitation centres and emergency polyclinics.

The results of instant drug testing are however not used in determining the imposition of prison sentences.

The manufactures of the kits used for instant drug testing claim the tests work extremely well in most cases.
