A former chair of the delegation representing the Central Union of Agricultural Producers and Forest Owners (MTK) was on Thursday found guilty of animal welfare offence.

The South Savo District Court convicted former MTK chief Aarno Puttonen, also a shareholder of an agricultural establishment in Puumala in which cows and sheep were found in a neglected state.

The court fined him 2,025 euros as the allegations brought against him were proved.

The crimes took place in 2008-2013, in which a dozen animals died as a result of starvation and disease.

Puttonen stepped down from his position when the incident was made public back in February 2013.

Another shareholder of the Puumala agricultural establishment was found guilty of aggravated animal welfare offence and violation of the animal disease act and was handed a nine-month conditional sentence.

The court ruled that he had acted recklessly and carelessly to the welfare of the animals in the establishment.
