FTimes-STT Report, July 5

Charges have been filed against 11 social and health workers of the City of Helsinki in connection to last year’s death of an 8-year-old girl.

According to the prosecution, charges were framed against the social workers based on their ineptness in dealing with child protection affairs.

The health workers on their side face charges on the grounds that they failed to recognise the abuse or maltreatment suffered by the girl.

Three workers and one high official of the City of Helsinki Social Services Department face charges of breach of official position.

Two doctors, two nurses and three paediatricians also face charges relating to breach of official duty.

All the accused, however, denied the charges.

A decision was reached not to prosecute one social worker.

Several child protection notifications had been made during the girl’s lifetime. The notifications were made by the girl’s head teacher, class teacher, biological mother as well as several neighbours.

The girl’s father and stepmother were sentenced to life imprisonment for the girl’s murder back in March 2013.

The girl was returned to her father a few months before her death.
