FTimes-STT Report, July 15
There is a clear rise in the number of accidents suffered by children during summer time, according to sources at different hospitals in the country.

The number of cases of fractured limbs has increased, particularly due to increased engagement in physical activities by the children during summer time, said the sources.

Anne Salonen, a children’s orthopaedic surgeon from Pirkanmaa Hospital said the warm weather has seen the paediatric clinics in the area carrying out three surgeries a day on an average for fractures.

The clinics normally hold a few surgeries a week.

Various accidents have been responsible for the increased congestion in the polyclinics.

A few days of waiting will, however, not damage the limbs, says Ilkka Helenius from the Department of Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery, Turku University Central Hospital.

Helenius, however, said if the case is an open fracture or if the fracture has caused nerve or vascular trauma, treatment should begin immediately.
