Harri Helminen from the Southwest Finland Ely Centre said the link between the mussel deaths and the nickel emission into the river can be confirmed a week later after examining the muscle tissues of the mussels.
A week ago, 66 tons of nickel passed through the river after leakage from Norilsk Nickel plant in Harjavalta.
The news on the dead mussels was reported by the YLE and the Satakunnan Kansa.
According to Helminen, it is almost certain that the deaths of the mussels can be pointed towards the nickel emission.
Matti Lankiniemi, environmental director of Pori, confirmed the deaths of mussels in Kyläsaari area of Pori and in Arantilankoski of Nakkila. Lankiniemi believes more cases will be discovered.
Norilsk Nickel had already decided to carry out investigations into the organisms living on the seabed and the river’s sediment.
