Tougher penalties for sexual offences will take effect from September, said a press release of the Ministry of Justice.

The changes see a broader definition of rape. A crime which previously was penalised as coercion into sexual intercourse will now be deemed as rape.

Underage rape will in the future be considered as aggravated. The penalty for aggravated rape is 2-10 years of imprisonment.

An amendment to the sexual harassment law will also come in force at the turn of the month. Touching of sexual in nature shall be deemed as molestation with penalties ranging from fine to 6-month imprisonment.

Besides sexual harassment, all sexual offences directed against adults will be moved under the public prosecution.

In the past, the public prosecution had not been mandated to raise charges against all sexual offences directed against adults, unless the victim wished to do so or very important public interest demanded the prosecution.
