The Helsinki City Council on Monday approved a huge plot reservation package that would make it possible to construct about 5,500 housing units to accommodate around 12,000 residents.
This is the largest single decision to allocate plots in decades.
The plots are located in the fishing port area, Kuninkaantammi neighbourhood and the Malmin Tullivuori area of Helsinki, among others.
There are plans to build both private and municipal housing units on the plots.
The plots allocated for private construction would see 1,300 housing units corresponding to 1,800 units on those reserved for the municipality housing construction.
The rest of the plots which correspond to about 2,500 units have been reserved for a separate allocation.
Currently in Helsinki there are reserved plots for the construction of 17,800 dwellings.
