Thunderstorm and neglect were possibly the reasons for Saturday’s violation of the Finnish airspace, said the Border Guard.
The Russian Air Force transport plane was in the Finnish airspace for a short span of time just before 7:00 pm over the Kemiönsaari southern sea area.
The Finnish air traffic control contacted the aircraft before it arrived in the Finnish airspace. The aircraft was informed that it had no permission to enter the Finnish airspace but it did not respond to the directive.
Charges have not been raised against the plane’s pilot because the pilot’s identity is not known. Territorial violations could lead to one being fined or imprisoned for up to a year.
The Border Guard is also investigating another suspected violation of the Finnish airspace by a Russian aircraft on Monday.
