The Imatra refugee reception centre came under a smoke bomb attack in the early hours on Sunday.

According to the police, the bomb was brought into the centre’s courtyard or was thrown into it at about 12.30 am.

No one was injured in the attack, nor was there any property damage.

The smoke bomb, however, did trigger the fire alarm. The building was evacuated, but people soon returned indoors.

The centre’s acting director, Mimmu Piirto, reported that the situation remained calm.

The police are investigating the incident as an attempt to cause destruction. The origin of the smoke bombs is also being investigated.

The centre houses families and children.

The police are looking for four people possibly related to the incident, who were driving a beige or wine red Ford Mondeo. Someone in the car was wearing an aviator jacket and a beret.

The Red Cross’s southeast Finland district director, Arja Vainio, told the news agency STT that the reception centre houses a lot of families with children and minor babies.

The centre at Hotel Vuoksenhovi has been in operation only for half a week. It houses about 200 people.

“The security level in the centre has now been raised,” Vainio said.
