The Helsinki District Court on Wednesday sentenced a man to four years imprisonment for aggravated rape in Hesperia Park in Helsinki.

The court said that the victim's testimony of the rape proved that she was strangled with a scarf beyond doubt.

The man, an asylum seeker dragged a woman into a thicket in the park in November last year. The woman was afraid for her life and eventually stopped resisting, said the court.

The woman said that she had been walking home when the man asked for a lighter and inquired where she lived. The rapist was unknown to his victim.

The woman refused and continued on her way, but the man wrapped a scarf around her neck and covered her mouth with his hands.

The victim received chlamydia from the rape. The crime was considered particularly damaging and dangerous, according to the court.

The court ordered the 20-year-old convict to pay more than euro 18,000 in compensation to the victim as well as legal costs.
