The Saimaa Canal was opened to traffic on Saturday, with the first icebreakers heading up the pathways toward Lappeenranta, Imatra and Joutseno.

After the icebreakers, the icebreaking tugboat Protector will continue in the northern part of Saimaa Lake and the Meteor will stay in the southern part.

The Saimaa Canal is the most important canal in Finland for transporting goods on waterways.

A lot of wood and other raw materials are transported via the canal.

The opening and closing dates of the Saimaa Canal are always affected by icy conditions.

In general, the canal is closed toward the end of January and opened in the beginning of April.

The Finnish and Russian canal operators together determine the canal’s navigable season.

The Finnish Transport Agency reminds all to be careful on the ice near the opened routes.
