Prime Minister Juha Sipilä on Sunday dismissed a speculation that the government is planning to break up the national postal corporation Posti.

The premier said the Helsingin Sanomat report on the matter has no basis.

Posti is currently fully owned by the state.

According to the news report, there was a strong proposal in the government where an option of splitting Posti into two companies was presented.

One company would operate on market-based terms, while the other would not.

“This is not the case. Besides, it is too early to discuss corporate strategy. The government has not made any decisions,” said Sipilä.

According to the Helsingin Sanomat, the government is also awaiting parliament’s approval to lower the state’s stake in national flag carrier Finnair to less than 50 per cent.

Sipilä did not comment on the Finnair issue, because the national flag carrier is a listed company.

The government will present its corporate ownership strategy to parliament on May 17. According to the premier, the government’s position will be revealed a little bit earlier.

“That time we will not go deep into company-specific issues, but we will reveal the entire strategy. Company-specific issues will be discussed later,” Sipilä said.
