The Finnish Reservists Association (FRA) wants to double the duration of civilian supplementary service.

“It would be logical to double the duration of the supplementary service, the same way the reservists’ refresher training days have been doubled. In practice, this would mean lifting the 40-hour service requirement to 80 hours,” said FRA honorary member and ruling Keskusta lawmaker Markku Pakkanen in a speech in Porvoo.

According to Pakkanen, the supplementary service for transferred reservists is only a five-day course, because civil service exercises are not organised.

“It’s quite a little time, compared to the obligation for refresher training. Why would we favour groups who do not want to participate in the defence of Finland,” Pakkanen asked.
