The city was seeking an EU data centre which would employ a few people and work closely with European research organisations.
EU sources told the news agency STT that the EU is not yet ready for the creation of a new institution. Instead, the commission encourages various research organisations to intensify their cooperation.
The commission has outlined guidelines to promote cooperation in the Arctic region. The idea of the EU Arctic Information Centre was included in the previous corresponding information published by the European Commission in 2008.
The European Parliament also gave support for establishment of such a centre. The centre is envisaged to be connected with the University of Lapland.
