FTimes-STT Report, Apr 29

The National Police Board on Thursday issued new guidelines on the use and control of the police suspect registry (EPRI).

National Police Commissioner Seppo Kolehmainen launched the new EPRI guidelines at a press conference in Helsinki.

According to the revised guidelines, reasons must be justified and recorded when registering a person in the suspect registry for abetting or supporting a crime.

EPRI is the police intelligence register, which stores information about people whom the police consider suspects of crimes or those suspected of abetting crimes.

The use of the registry was clarified in the new guidelines.

The National Police Board underlined that every recording of data must be assessed case by case.

When a person is first recorded into the registry, the police officer entering the data will also be identified.

A scandal arose around the Epri in 2013, when it was discovered that Russian President Vladimir Putin, among others, was included in the register as a crime suspect.
