The Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party) lawmaker Arto Satonen was on Thursday elected the new deputy speaker of parliament.

Satonen received 132 votes and replaces the newly appointed Interior Minister Paula Risikko.

The Kokoomus did not demand the position of speaker, although it has the same number of MPs in parliament as that of the Perussuomalaiset (Finns Party).

Both the parties now have 37 lawmakers each after a Finns Party MP defected to the main opposition Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party of Finland).

The position of the speaker is traditionally occupied by the second largest party in parliament.

According to the new party chair of the Kokoomus, Petteri Orpo, there is no need to make changes due to one defection.
